Community, Economic and Business Development
Community and Economic Development are important goals for the Poplar River First Nation. The development of alternative economic ventures is a key objective for this Council and a number of economic development projects are currently underway. Currently, our main economic base consists of commercial fishing, trapping, and local, and band owned businesses.
Businesses include the Negginan Fishing Station, Negginan Building Supplies, B and B Networks Internet Services, Sagatay Lodge, Negginan Hardware, Bunny’s Restaurant and Sarah’s Restaurant, Dubby’s Pizza, Mitasosipe Trading Post, and the Northern Store.
We have created a Development Corporation as a part of our multi-faceted community economic development plan for the Poplar River First Nation. The Corporation will be responsible for developing a business development strategy for the community as well as conducting feasibility studies for new Poplar River businesses, and strengthening existing Band owned enterprises.
We have also signed a $2.25 million Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with the East Side Road Authority (ESRA) that will provide jobs, training and economic opportunities for band members. As a part of this Agreement we have established the Asatiwisipe Construction Inc. in order to enter into contracts with ESRA for pre-construction services in respect to the building of the East Side road.
Poplar River First Nation is a part owner of the South Beach Casino and Resort. The Casino helps to build a solid economic base enabling us to pursue other economic and community development opportunities.
